What is a High School GPA?

A high school GPA (Grade Point Average) is a standardized way to measure academic achievement. It is used by schools and colleges to evaluate your academic performance and eligibility for scholarships, honors, and admissions.

How is High School GPA Calculated?

  • Unweighted GPA: Each letter grade is converted to a number (A=4.0, B=3.0, etc.), summed, and divided by the number of courses.
  • Weighted GPA: Honors, AP, and IB courses receive extra points (e.g., A in AP = 5.0).
Unweighted GPA Formula:
Unweighted GPA = Σ(Grade Points) ÷ Number of Courses
Weighted GPA Formula:
Weighted GPA = Σ(Weighted Grade Points) ÷ Number of Courses
Example Calculation:
If you take 4 courses and get A (4.0), B+ (3.3), A- (3.7), and B (3.0):
Unweighted GPA = (4.0 + 3.3 + 3.7 + 3.0) / 4 = 3.5
